Yeah, he has the name of the legendary bird from Chinese mithology. Suzaku is a bird that most people also call it Phoenix, but they are not the same bird.

EDIT: a little explanation about the Four Legendary Gods from the Chinese Mithology:

Actually there are five gods, and each one's element is based on the Five Elements theory. But the fifth god, The Yellow Dragon of the Center, is not shown in the mangá for the "central" figure is exactly Yuki and Makoto, the main characters.

Here is the correct relation of names for Suzaku and his other three brothers, plus their elements (two of them had their elements changed for plot convenience).

Genbu (Xuan Wu): the Black Turtle rules the North, and the element of Water.
Suzaku (Zhu Que): the Red Phoenix rules the South, and the element of Fire.
Seiryuu (Qing Long): the Azure Dragon rules the East, and the element of Earth. (original is Wood)
Byakko (Bai Hu): the White Tiger rules the West, and the element of Air. (original is Metal)

Chinese believed that each God used to protect the Imperial Palace, so there are four temples for each God protecting the main city on their respective place (Byakko's is at the West, Seiryuu's, East, Suzaku's, South and Genbu's, North). The fifth god protects the Center.

***** SPOILERS for Apokruphus, do not read this part if you intend to read my mangá (I'll try to put it online when I have time for it)************

There are four dragon youkais in Apokruphus' cast. They are working for Makoto (Lich, as he took Makoto's body and locked the poor elf inside the Apokruphus book). Each dragon represents one of the four elements, Water, Air, Earth and Fire. As for Suzaku, he is the Fire Dragon and, although he is the youngest of his brothers (the other 3 elemental dragons), he is the strongest and the head of the family.

******** END OF THE SPOILER *********

Suzaku is only a kid (to have an idea, if you take Inuyasha's age, Suzaku is younger than him) with social problems. He is quite lonely and innocent, but on the other hand he is very clever.

Media: Watercolourable pencils, ink. Background added with Open Canvas.
Time: Uh...... I guess it took something around 3 or 4 hours.

Yes , considering the Five Elements Chinese theory, which consists in five elements, fire, water, earth, wood and metal, and five mythological beasts, being the fifth a yellow dragon. This description is quite old and I must change it, for I had to adapt the animals for the Five Elements theory of Japan because they are four brothers (considering that Sky/Heaven is an element already represented by another character), so the correct is:

Genbu (Xuan Wu): the Black Turtle rules the North, and the element of Water.
Suzaku (Zhu Que): the Red Phoenix rules the South, and the element of Fire.
Seiryuu (Qing Long): the Azure Dragon rules the East, and the element of Earth. (original is Wood)
Byakko (Bai Hu): the White Tiger rules the West, and the element of Air. (original is Metal)

Thanks for remember me of my mistake, I should update the description now ^^.

Thanks!:) I love ur art and I hope you keep creating things like this one! I love it. I hardly know anything about Chinese gods or anything, it's just that I finished reading a series called Dark heavens and it's all about Xuan Wu in human form looking after his daughter. It's a really good series:) Australian author.

I dunno if it works exactely the same way as the 4 japanese guardians, but this is what I heard from a friend:
- suzaku isn't really a phoenix, true, both birds do look alike and both are related to fire, whoever the legends, powers, etc about them is totally different, thus leading to different creatures
- genbu isn't a turtle at all, more likely it's a snake and a turtle, rather a strange creature, since it is a turtle with a snake stiking out of its shell as a second head
- byakko's element isn't wind? o.o

Yes, you are right, Byakko's elements is Wind/Air (I must have copied the wrong element from that site I took the information).

As for Suzaku, thanks for letting me know more about him ^^. What I don't know is if the Phoenix we know is the same kind of bird that Chineses believed to be Suzaku.

As for Genbu, it's a turtle with a snake inside it's shell. But Ocident just call him Turtle, as we don't have an exact translation for it's name. I don't know if I should change it in the artist's comments.

Another thing that people might not know is that the 4 japanese guardians ARE the 4 gods from the Chinese mithology. Few people know that most of Japan's mithology is based on Chinese mithology. That's why their calendar and the Juunishi, for example, are the same.

Another note about silly mistakes people from the East side do (For this I mean americans and europeans). In Juunishi, some people think that the Rabbit is the Cat. That's wrong, the cat never belonged to the Juunishi, as well as the Pig. The correct animal is the Boar.

Thanks alot for your observations ^___^.

yeah, I knew that the 4 guardians were the 4 gods, however I didn't knew if japanese ppl did any changes or not to them

also, what is even funnier about the Juunishi, is that some ppl KNOW that fable about the cat who was tricked by the mouse so it was left out of the Juunishi, but ALSO thinks that the rabit is the cat......I wonder what kind of logic these ppl have o.O

A weird logic.

For the 4 gods, I think Japanese people created some other legends related to them.
